Wilmington VAMC is expanding surgical services and is looking to hire BC/BE individuals for anesthesiologist position in the depart of Surgery. Wilmington is a quaint city located on the mid-Atlantic region between the megalopolis on the east coast. Currently a standard complexity facility working toward performing increased complexity to include a wide range of vascular, ENT, General surgery, ortho, oral maxillofacial surgery, gynecologic procedure, podiatry, Urology and Ophthalmology To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. (NOTE: VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), b) OR [(2) Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA),OR (3) Other residencies (non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States), which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences. Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs). PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e., not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis. PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; rather, they are to have a "scope of practice" that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision. Additionally, surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs. Proficiency in spoken and written English. Preferred Experience: Minimum 5 years experience after Residency Reference: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-2 Physician Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office. Physical Requirements: Light Lifting under 15 pounds; Straight pulling (2 hours), Pushing (1 - 2 hours), Standing (3 hours); Repeated bending (1 hour); Both Legs required; Ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously; Near vision correctable at 13" to 16" to Jaeger 1 to 4; Far vision correctable in one eye to 20/20 and 20/40 in the other; Both eyes required; Depth perception; Ability to distinguish basic colors; Hearing (aid permitted). Note: Must have Basic Life Support (BLS) certification prior to assuming clinical duties. The BLS requirement is satisfied by successfully completing an American Heart Association (AHA) BLS Healthcare Provider Course or Military Training Network (MTN). Completes pre-anesthesia assessment of the surgical patient. Interviews the patient; documents pertinent medical history and physical examination, including but not limited to cardiac, pulmonary and airway assessments. Explains anesthetic procedures, risk factors and solicits questions. Orders pertinent diagnostic tests (e.g. ECG, CXR, Blood tests). Take an active role in perioperative optimization of the patients in consultation with other medical specialists. Orders pre-anesthesia medications to include any of the following drug classes: Analgesics (including narcotics), Sedative/Hypnotic drugs, Anti-emetics, or Antisialagogues, H2Blockers or antacids. Discusses anesthetic plans with the patient and obtains consents when needed. Administers and supervises all types of anesthetics: General anesthesia, Monitored Anesthesia Care, Spinal anesthesia, Epidural anesthesia, Nerve blocks, IV Regional anesthesia. Assists the CRNA at all critical parts of the anesthetic and helps them with expert advice when needed. Practices proper and safe positioning of patient. Manages the anesthetic, promptly detects problems, and implements corrective action with timely follow-up communication with the chief of anesthesia when needed. Manages fluid, blood, electrolyte and acid-base balance. Monitors and interprets invasive monitoring information. Documents all aspects of patient care on the anesthesia record in legible penmanship. Adheres to infection control guidelines set forth by the Medical Center Infection Control Committee including utilizing recommended barrier precautions commensurate with exposure, complying with mandatory universal precautions, and employing safe recommended practices to prevent needle sticks. Work Schedule: Monday-Friday 7:30 am to 4:00 pm with reasonable back up on call coverage from home on a PRN or intermittent basis."]
