The Alexandria VA Health Care System has an immediate opening for a Psychiatrist or an Internist. This announcement reflects a closing date of September 30, 2022. We will accept application packets on an on-going basis; however, qualified applicants will be referred to the selecting official at two-week intervals. The first referral will be two weeks from the opening date of the announcement. If the vacancy is filled prior to the current closing date, the announcement will be closed. The individual must qualify to perform duties as a physician, have completed an accredited residency and/or possess experience which has qualified the individual to perform general duties and some specialized functions and procedures without supervision. Staff physicians may also include attendings who train physician residents assigned in facilities with residency training programs, and consultants who are capable of giving authoritative views and opinions on subjects in their field of medicine. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Completion of residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. Proficiency in spoken and written English. Preferred: Board Certified or Board Eligible Psychiatrist Preferred Experience: (For Internist) past experience working on an inpatient psychiatric unit. Reference: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-2 Physician Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office. Physical Requirements: The Physical Requirements of this position are concerned with the mental and physical ability of the applicant to satisfactorily perform the duties of the proposed assignment and may include requisite laboratory and other screening as required by Federal regulatory agencies. Physician applicants must have the mental and physical ability to perform core privileges required by the specialty position in addition to any specialty privileges requested. Position requires walking, bending, stooping, and some lifting in the direct care of patients. There may also be extended periods of sitting. Work requires daily trips from employee's work-area to other areas throughout the inpatient unit. ["The selectee will serve as a Psychiatrist or Internist in Mental Health Service. He/she will perform the following duties to include, but not limited to: Uses assessment skills to promptly examine new patients thoroughly using appropriate clinical, laboratory and other pertinent data. Provides follow-up when indicated. Answers Mental Health consult requests when necessary. Initiates appropriate and timely treatment. Prescribes medications according to outpatient formulary. Provides direct, short-term, crisis intervention, grief work and brief psychotherapy. Counsels patients on smoking, alcohol and/or other substance cessation. Accurately interprets and evaluates clinical data for the purpose of determining diagnosis and clinical status. Formulates assessment and plan according to accepted protocols, treatment plans or attending physician's treatment protocols, treatment plans or recommendations. Acts as a consultant in involving patients in the treatment and management plan. Records data from clinic visit, including chief complaints, active problems, medications, physical findings and results of diagnostic tests. Promptly and completely reports physical examinations and changes in patient status. Maintains clear, accurate, and current clinical records. Completes medical records per hospital regulations. Provides patient education of medical/mental health conditions, preventive measures and prescribed treatments. Interacts effectively and harmoniously with other staff members. Demonstrates the ability to accept constructive counseling. Networks with professional and/or health related groups in the community. Promotes quality patient care as a clinical expert in Psychiatry; works as mentor, preceptor, consultant, and researcher; works collaboratively with other health care professionals to accomplish patient, service and hospital goals. Outpatient provider of Medication-Assisted Therapy for SUDS, including Suboxone.
